GlaMBIE Workshop Edinburgh – Event Summary

From Monday 28th – Wednesday 30th August, we welcomed 25 participants of the GlaMBIE project to sunny Edinburgh, for the second GlaMBIE workshop. The three day event involved lots of useful discussion from both in-person and online participants, as well as some uniquely Scottish evening events!

On Day 1, we gathered in observational source groups and discussed each individual datasets that was been submitted to the project. Many productive discussions were had by the gravimetry, altimetry, and DEM differencing & glaciological groups, with contributions from online GlaMBIE participants who were unable to join the workshop in person.

In the evening, we took a trip to the statue of famous Scottish physicist, James Clerk Maxwell, and had an underground tour of an historic Edinburgh street.

Day 2 of the workshop focussed on bringing results from different sources together into a regional consensus, including discussions of statistics and how to treat uncertainties within the GlaMBIE project.

In the evening, we climbed Arthur’s Seat, and ancient volcano in the heart of the city. We heard from Professor David Sugden, a glacial geomorphologist who described how the Scottish landscape has been shaped by glaciers in the past.

Day 3 included a joint session with the particpants of the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) Workshop, as well as a stakeholder session that included many interesting broader discussions. In the evening, we had a traditional scottish Ceilidh, with a live band playing traditional folk music.

The GlaMBIE consortium would like to extend a huge thank you to all of the GlaMBIE participants that contributed to the workshop, both in-person and online!
