As part of the European Space Agency Conference Living Planet Symposium 2022 in Bonn, GlaMBIE held a glacier community networking event with four talks and an interesting open discussion afterwards.
Speakers and programme:
- 17:30-1740: An overview on the Glacier Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise, Livia Jakob (Earthwave, UK)
- 17:40-17:50: A view from the IACS working group RAGMAC, Matthias H. Braun (University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, DE)
- 17:50-18:00: A view from the Alps, Frank Paul (University of Zurich, CH)
- 18:00-18:10: A view from NASA, Alex Gardner (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, USA)
- 18:10-18:25: Open discussion and call for participation
Event description:
Satellite observations have pushed glacier monitoring to truly global scales and resulted in reconciled estimates of glacier mass changes and its contributions to global sea-level rise. However, the latest IPCC assessment reports (IPCC SROCC and AR6) highlighted the shortcomings of the current methods: while an increasing number of regional estimates from various sources are now becoming available, there are large variations between these assessments, beyond stated uncertainties. This calls for a coordinated intercomparison exercise of regional glacier mass changes from glaciological in-situ measurements and various remote sensing sources, including geodetic DEM differencing, altimetry, and gravimetry. The present networking event will introduce a corresponding project, collect different views from related organizations, and calls for feedback and participation from the glaciological community.
