Welcome to GlaMBIE, the Glacier Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise

Dear colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to announce the launch of the “Glacier Mass Balance Intercomparison Exercise” (GlaMBIE). This project aims for a reconciled assessment of global glacier mass changes towards the next IPCC report.

In a nutshell, we aim to:
+ define a set of criteria to standardise the assessment and its uncertainty,
+ collect and analyse regional assessments from the community across the range of available methods (i.e., glaciological method, DEM differencing, altimetry, gravimetry),
+ produce and publish a consensus estimate at regional and global
levels, and
+ develop a set of recommendations for standardised future assessments.

GlaMBIE is funded within ESA’s Polar Science Cluster as a contribution to the IACS working group on Regional Assessments of Glacier Mass Change (RAGMAC).

Stay tuned for our call for participation, which will be sent out later this year.

Kind regards

Noel Gourmelen and Michael Zemp, on behalf of the GlaMBIE consortium
