GlaMBIE Workshop 2 - Edinburgh

Overview

From 28th – 30th August 2023, the GlaMBIE community will meet in Edinburgh for the second GlaMBIE workshop at CodeBase in Edinburgh. The aim of the workshop is to focus on the main GlaMBIE study and discuss the submitted data sets in detail (with the participants and stakeholders), as well as the shared paper. The workshop is open to GlaMBIE participants, the Scientific Advisory Board, the Stakeholder Board and the wider glacier community. Some sessions in the meeting will be held in hybrid format, however it will rely heavily on the physical presence of participants. We strongly encourage the in-person attendance of at least one co-author per data submission.

There is an exciting evening programme after the day sessions, leaving plenty of time for socialising and networking.

The 7th OGGM Global Glacier Modelling Workshop 2023 is also taking place from the 28th August – 1st September in Edinburgh. There is a joint session and social event on Wednesday.

MEeting agendA

The workshop is held across 3 days, and follows the following general structure:

Pre-workshop (Sunday 27th August):

    • Early evening: Icebreaker drinks for early arrivals

Day 1 (Monday 28th August) :

    • Discussions in breakout rooms per source (including online drop-ins)
    • Evening: Edinburgh Underground Tour

Day 2 (Tuesday 29th August) :

    • Bringing results from different sources together into a regional consensus
    • Evening: Walk across Arthur’s seat followed by the workshop dinner and skittles/bowling at The Sheep Heid Inn

Day 3 (Wednesday 30th August): 

    • Global picture & working towards the publication, including Stakeholder Board session
    • Evening: Scottish Ceilidh dancing together with participants from OGGM

Presentations from participants
We expect each data submission group (online and in-person) to give a very brief summary of their data submission (maximum 5 mins) during the breakout groups Monday morning. This should give an overview of the dataset with focus on processing steps / techniques which might explain differences between your solution and other solutions and help in the discussion afterwards.
 
Online participation – Breakout session (Monday, 28th)

Online-only participants of the workshop are encouraged to participate in the discussions during breakout sessions via Google Meet. A list of the meeting links needed to join these discussions can be found in the online workshop agenda.

Online drop-ins for breakout groups (per source) start on Monday at 11:15 (British summer time, GMT+1). If no one in your submission group can join at 11:15 AM please let us know (by email) the time when you will join online for the breakout session. 

Online participation – Summary sessions & stakeholder session

Monday and Tuesday will have summary sessions and discussions with online participants in the afternoon. We will also stream the stakeholder sessions on Wednesday afternoon online. Check the online workshop agenda for more information.

 
Workshop material
Participants of the GlaMBIE experiment receive result plots a few days prior to the workshop. We hope that they will somewhat get familiar with these before the workshop, so the start of the discussions will be more productive. Please do not share/distribute this material, it is strictly for GlaMBIE participants!

About edinburgh & codebase

The workshop will be hosted by Earthwave and The University of Edinburgh at CodeBase Edinburgh. CodeBase is the UK’s largest technology incubator, and is located in the very centre of town, at the foot of Edinburgh castle. The blue star on the following map indicates your entrance to the building:

 

To travel to CodeBase from Waverley station, you can either take a short 15 minute walk along the Royal Mile, or hop on the 1 / 16 / 34 / 124 bus from the Princes Street (Stop PP) bus stop. To travel to CodeBase from Edinburgh Airport, either get the 100 Airlink Bus from Airport (Stop A) to Shandwick Place (Stop SC), or the Tram to the West End stop, and then walk for ~10 minutes.

The city centre location means that there should be a multitude of accommodation options available within a 10 minute walk of the workshop venue. However, participants should note that the Edinburgh International Festival takes place in the month of August (finishing on Monday 28th), meaning that accommodation should be booked as soon as possible & prices may be higher for the first two nights.

The FESTIVAL IN EDINBURGH

Every year for the month of August, Edinburgh hosts various festivals celebrating the arts. This includes the Edinburgh International Festival, the Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. The final day of the Fringe Festival is Monday 28th August.

For a more spontaneous evening, visit the box office at George Square or Bristo Square to see what tickets are available for that evening. George Square Gardens also hosts an outdoor venue with lots of food and drink options, as well as comedy venues and live music.
